Suzie Bridges Architects have been appointed to design the annexe; an extension and refurbishment of Chesil Theatre in Winchester, Hampshire.
The scheme creates a new 2-storey annex to the existing Grade II* listed theatre, with a new maximum 76 seat flexible studio space, an accessible entrance, and additional backstage support spaces. The current building is inaccessible to wheelchair users, so access will be provided throughout via improved foyer spaces serving new and existing areas.
The simple gabled design fits within the existing historic context and uses sympathetic materials like zinc cladding and local red bricks. A structural glass link connects the new extension to the existing historic building in an elegant and subtle manner.
