project description

"We selected SBA for this important project based on Suzie's expertise in facilities for the performing arts. Suzie has worked closely with us over the past 4 years to help us find the right building and we are delighted with her design proposals for works at 6 Chancel Street."   David Wheldon – MD, Philharmonia Orchestra

Suzie Bridges has worked with the Philharmonia Orchestra since 2010, initially helping them find the right site for their own home. The Victorian building in Chancel Street provided the precise combination of square footage and quirky character that perfectly reflected the nature of the organisation. The project consolidated all of their administration, archive and rehearsal space onto a single site, within walking distance of the Southbank and Festival Hall.

A large part of the Phase 1 works by Suzie Bridges Architects focused on stripping out many years of surface-fixed building service installations. State-of-the art mechanical, electrical and digital infrastructure was then carefully concealed within the building fabric. Extensive investigation work during the design stages tested the viability of these services routes in advance of construction. The thermal performance of the building fabric was also upgraded to reduce energy bills and provide a resilient home base.

The internal fit-out design uncovered many of the hidden qualities of the original building. The interior now provides a calm and contemporary backdrop against which the orchestra can display their vast collection of archival material. Colour and vibrancy come from new furniture and selected pieces of bespoke joinery.

Phase 2 explores options to extend and develop the building so the Philharmonia can offer public access to the orchestra's rehearsals, and provide a suite of education and starter work units for emerging musicians and musical organisations. Smart strategic planning during Phase 1 has ensured that services can be adapted in the future with minimal abortive work and disruption. Suzie Bridges Architects will be working closely with the Orchestra to develop viability and funding strategies, and to develop an overall design concept for this larger project development.
